Networking 101
Business Networking
Networking is all about building relationships, people are far more likely to want to do business with someone they like, know and trust. You should always be networking, no matter what the situation. You could at a training seminar, a B2B event or even at a bar. You never know when you may meet a like minded business person who could potentially become a valuable contact.
Always carry a supply of business cards with you, along with a pen for writing any notes. It can be difficult to remember all the details, especially if you are at a large event and have met a number of people.
Don't be a wall flower, successful networking requires engaging with people, making connections and coming away with important contacts. While at a corporate event or conference mingle with as many people as possible and make the most of your time. The more people you meet the more opportunities you can make.
A good way to break the ice is by walking up to someone and asking them a simple question, like how long they have worked for their company or where they went to college or university. Once they have answered you can then introduce yourself and ask them a bit more about themselves. You can then exchange business cards and tell them a little bit about what you do.
It is important to be good listener and always make eye contact. Be friendly and smile at people, you will be far more successful if you are genuine. If you come across too strongly or act desperate you could put people off.
Make sure to follow up with any contacts you have made as soon as possible either via email or a phone call. You could make a reference to something you talked about which will help them remember who you are.
